Poverty

  • 736 million people lived below the international poverty line of US $ 1.90 a day in 2015.
  • In 2018, almost 8 per cent of the world’s workers and their families lived on less than US$1.90 per person per day.
  • Most people living below the poverty line belong to two regions: Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • As of 2018, 55 per cent of the world’s populations have no access to at least one social protection cash benefit.

Fertility Rate:

The six states with higher than national fertility rate (and their TFR) in 2018 were Bihar (3.2), Uttar Pradesh (2.9) Madhya Pradesh (2.7), Rajasthan (2.5), Jharkhand (2.5) and Chhattisgarh (2.4) 

Diet

  • A 100 Kcal of energy from fruits costs five times that from rice — but they are also 20 per cent more expensive than even the western world. 
  • Based on a NIN-ICMR report of 2019, I estimate that Indians eat only 32 grams of fruit a day versus the recommended amount of 100 grams.

Debt:

  • The IMF projects the fiscal deficit as a proportion of GDP in emerging markets and middle-income economies (EMMIEs) as a group to rise from 4.9 per cent in 2019 to 10.7 per cent in 2020 

Rural Economy:

  • Rural economy contributes 25-30% to the GDP.

MSME:

  • Share in national gross value added is about 32%.
  • Provide employment to about 111 million workers.

Cybercrimes

  • Cybercrimes in India caused Rs 1.25 lakh crore loss in 2019

Indian Banking system:

  • Indian banks have Rs 144 lakh crore in bank deposits and  Rs 110 lakh crore in bank loans .
  • Banks have 210 crore deposit accounts but only 27 crore loan accounts.

Pending Case:

  • There are 3.1 crore cases pending in the lower courts (83 lakh pending for over 10 years), 44 lakh in the high courts (32 lakh pending for over 10 years), and 60,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court.
  • Prisons are over capacity by 114 per cent, of which two-thirds are undertrials.

Health Expenditure

  • Public expenditure in health in India is 0.9% to 1.28% GDP.
  • It is one of the lowest in the world.
  • In fact, this is less than the average of the poorest countries in the world at 1.6%.
