On this Day: National Statistics Day
In recognition of the notable contribution made by Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of economic planning and statistical development in the post independent era, the Govt. of India has decided to designate 29th June every year, coinciding with his birth anniversary, as Statistics Day in the category of special day to be celebrated at the national level.
Personality of the Day:
Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis:
- Mahalanobis, popularly called PCM founded the Indian Statistical Institute and was one of the main members of the first Planning Commission of India. Mahalanobis can easily be called a pioneer who brought the concept of planning and five year plan in India.
- The scientist is not only remembered for devising the Mahalanobis distance. His other contributions to statistics include the introduction of the concept of pilot surveys and for designing large-scale sample surveys
