• The Brics nations represent almost 44% of the world population, collectively represent almost 26% geographical areas and are home to over 2.88 billion people. BRICS member countries collectively represent about 32% of the world’s GDP.

Land Degradation:

• 85 million hectares (mha) of land — an area 2.5 times the size of India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh — has already been degraded. Of this, 3.32 mha — an area 22 times the size of Delhi — has been added in the 15 years between 2003-05 and 2018-19.

Climate Change:

• According to data by Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), in 2020 in India, 3,856,000 people were displaced by environmental disasters, 989 times more than the 3,900 people displaced by conflicts. Around 9.2 million displacements were recorded in the region.
